For this purpose Pro-forma Income Statements (Exhibit 2) and Pro-forma Balance Sheets (Exhibit 3) have been prepared for the next four years (1972 through 1975). From 1968 to 1971, Carrefour has used trade notes extensively as a source of cash. Other significant sources of funds are Other Current Liabilities, Accounts Payable, Shareholder’s Equity and Long term debt. Most of the sources have been utilized to fund Building and also to generate more cash for the firm. A good portion of the sources have also been used to create more Inventories from 1968 to 1971. Land has been acquired during these four years as also other fixed assets and current assets. As is seen from the Pro-forma Balance Sheet, Carrefour would have to take significant amounts of Long Term Debt(at 10% Interest rate) in order to finance its expansion outside France. According to the projections, LT Debt would have to be increased to around 89% from 1971 to 1972 and 96% from 1972 to 1973 respectively. This means Carrefour would also have to pay huge amounts of interest on these debts. With revenue growth of 35% Carrefour would be able to support its debt and still earn fair amounts of profit including dividend payouts. However, huge amount of debt and interest expense might be risky and could lead to negative earnings if the actual revenue growth falls below the expected value of 35%. She grows up with the horrible memory of the day she accidentally killed her mother. If a company gets that outsourcing is much economical than providing the services themselves, then they are free to outsource. The main reason why companies outsource the services is to enable them to concentrate on their core activities of meeting the needs their customers and also in meeting the objectives of the firm. For a company like Silwan Foods International to outsource logistics services from a logistics provider, its aim is to reduce excess inventories, warehouses and to reduce labor cost. This also reduces the working capital investment and fixed costs. The company needs to analyze the costs of services that they are planning to outsource and compare them with the costs of providing it internally. Solicitations are sent to vendors who provide the goods or the services the company wants to outsource. The vendor who meets the criteria set by procurement team is identified (Saxena, 2008). For the transaction between Silwan Food International and AGS Logistics LLC, purchases below $ 5000 can be approved by the procurement managers. Any transaction which exceeds such amount of money must be approved by the joint agreement of the board of contract review. It will require the board to meet for them to determine which of the contract they will take for the transactions exceeding $ 5000. The board must be made by individuals from the all the departments of the company who understands the goals and objectives of the company (Turner and Simister 2001). Decision Criteria Decision criteria are used to determine the reliability eff iciency and effectiveness of the organization that has been awarded the contract to provide the services. Silwan Food International must evaluate the accountability of AGS Logistics LLC in providing the logistics services to them.Advertising Looking for research paper on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More The performance of AGS Logistics LLC must be evaluated against the expectations of Silwan Food International. The company must ensure that logistics providers enable them to meet their objectives of meeting their customer’s needs within the least time possible. Firm’s performance is affected by a lot of factors which includes its structures, environment, strategies resources and learning. Performance of any organization can be measured under different categories. Demand-oriented capabilities involving delivery, reliability, after sale services and responsiveness to target markets are among the factors which are used by many organizations to measure performance. The supply oriented capabilities include reduction of distribution cost of the organization and the geographical coverage (Turner and Simister 2001). Quality of logistic services provided by the AGS Logistics LLC will be measured by comparing the performance with the expectations and on the basis of the contract between the two companies. Customer’s feedback is a requirement to gauge the effectiveness of the services. One of the Silwan Food International is to meet the needs of the customers efficiently. The speed in which the products enter to the market can win the company a competitive advantage or leads to customers shifting to the competitors. The perception of Silwan Food International customers may be affected negatively if they do not get the products they ordered in the right place and at the right time. Quality of logistic services provided by AGS Logistics LLC can be measured against the number of orders gotten from the areas served by the company (Shadrach Ekeanyanwu, 2003). Past performance and history of the organization can determine the future performance. Past performance is a key indicator of the ability of the organization to meet their duties well. It places the organization in a better position to forecast the quality of the services which is to be provided. Th is performance indicator enables the suppliers uphold high performance in providing goods and services. This indicator enables organizations to recognize strengths, weaknesses and capabilities of their supplies (Turner Simister, 2001). Silwan Food International can be in a good position if it is able to determine the capability of AGS Logistics LLC through the review of its past performance. Performance evaluation of suppliers is vital since it guarantees the organization with quality service and customer satisfaction. If AGS Logistics LLC past performance had not been good and there are records showing inefficiency of logistics services, then Silwan Food International would get the reason to turn down agreement. The two companies have the right to disclose information about their past performance and this information should be used to determine each company’s future expectation (Shadrach Ekeanyanwu, 2003). According to Saxena (2008), Comparison of in-sourcing and outsourci ng cost is used to reduce operational cost in organizations. This is because the organization is able to make a decision on whether to outsource or in-source. Before a company decides to outsource, they consider the benefits each decision will make to the organization. The fee charged by the service providers assists organizations in making decision. Some organizations fail in making an outsourcing decision by considering the suppliers with the least cost without considering the effectiveness and quality of services. Quality of services provided by AGS Logistics LLC made the Silwan Food International to select it as their main suppliers of the logistics services (Turner Simister, 2001). The last performance measurement in the decision criteria is the date of delivery. A company may be able to select its suppliers based on how well they meet the deadlines set. Suppliers who fail to meet deadlines are not support to be considered for contracts. This is because they can cause mistrust from the customers if their needs are not met in time. When supplies deliver the products or services in time, they save the organization a lot of operating cost and they are also winning that organization a competitive advantage. The organization is able to reach more customers and satisfy them. AGS Logistics LLC company provides high services to other organizations within the agreed time. Their past performance in delivery of goods has shown that the organization is able deliver large amount of stock to the customers in the right time that the customers need them. Its association with prominent and well performing organizations in UAE has placed it in a position that every organization wants to outsource the logistics services from them (Shadrach Ekeanyanwu, 2003). Term and Termination The conditions of the agreement start from the date that the agreement was signed between the two companies. The agreement will take a period of three years if the two companies do not a reason to terminate it. During those 3 years, there will be a meeting every first day of May to negotiate the charges. AGS Logistics LLC will give a report on any increase in charges in 45 days before they meet to negotiate. The increase in warehouse charges will also be presented in writing to the Silwan Food International 15 days before the date of negotiation and at least 5 days before the transportation date. All notices required by this agreement will be made in writing. Any other parties under this agreement can file a request to terminate the agreement. This may be due to default materials. If one of the parties writes a notice containing the details of the default and the other party ignores the complaint or fails to rectify the default within 20 days, the company can terminate the agreement and seek other reliable companies. The termination of the agreement can also happen if one party fails to vacate the appointment of the other party within the agreed time in the contract. After t he termination of the contract, the AGS Logistics LLC will return all the copies of documents, data, records which belong to the Silwan Foods International. Silwan Foods International will have an obligation to return the document to the AGS Logistics LLC upon the termination of the contract. The notices which will be made with regard to this agreement will be delivered directly to the company not longer than one day. The addresses of each company are given in the details sheet presented with the contract document. Vendor Management In this section, the roles of every person involved in the procurement of services and products will be stated to ensure that every person has a role to play in the acquisition of products in the organization. Quality and appropriateness of the products or services are verified by the procurement team to ensure that they are of good quality and that they are in quantities which the companies agreed. Vendor management ensures that the suppliers continue t o supply the required goods and services of good quality as it is stated in the agreement. Procurement managers are responsible to manage vendors and to schedule for meetings to monitor the progress of their progress. Key performance indicators enable the manager to evaluate the work done by the suppliers whether they have met the requirements in the agreement. In a contract agreement, the parties indicate the time, venues and dates when they will be meeting to evaluate their progress. Communication is vital in vendor management because errors which might arise or changes that must be made are solved early before they cause unsatisfaction. Project specifications guide procurement teams from both organizations in checking the quality and effectiveness (Saxena, 2008). The agreement of AGS Logistics LLC and Silwan Food International stated that they will be meeting one in six months to monitor the progress of their contract. It is during these meetings that procurement managers and his team from Silwan Food International value the quality of services that AGS Logistics LLC provides to them and whether they meet the requirement of customers in delivering them their products which they have ordered. Any changes in price charge fro the suppliers are communicated at the meeting for negotiation purposes (Saxena, 2008). Performance Metrics for Procurement Activities Metrics to be used in assessment of the performance of the procurement activities are stated in this section of procurement plan. These metrics ensures that the suppliers observe the schedule that they agreed in supplying their products and services. They are used to measure the supplier performance. Procurement team uses them to compile data on procurement activities of the organization to guide them in choosing a supplier in future. Procurement departments develop their own performance metrics which guides them in selecting future suppliers and also ensures that the performance of the current suppliers is within the schedule of the organization. Rating tables are developed by the procurement team for a purpose of building past performance database (Turner Simister, 2001). Each company in the agreement has the obligation to protect the other party’s information† (2006, p. 35). One party can gain access to the other party’s information without the consent of the other party. The company is, therefore, obliged to use the information only in the performance of the duties in the agreement but not for other purpose whatsoever. They are bound to disclose the information only to their employees who needs in the process of providing the services. However, the parties are free to disclose the confidential information if and only if the information is needed by law. If under any circumstances, the information is being needed by law, the disclosing party has to inform the other party through writing and ask for assistance in the disclosure of the information. If the disclos ing party informs the other party before it discloses the information, this will not be regarded as a bleach of contract since both the parties will be aware of the disclosure Rating table Vendor Product quality Ontime delivery Documentation quality Development cost Development time Cost per unit Transactional efficiency Vendor 1 Vendor 2 Vendor 3 Scale 1-3 where: Unsatisfactory Acceptable Exceptional Procurement managers from Silwan Food International manages their performance metrics to monitor and measure the performance of AGS Logistics LLC so that after their contract is over, they can be able to decide on whether to renew that contract or get other logistics suppliers. The metrics summarizes the whole performance and progress of the suppliers and also gives them a challenge to deliver quality goods and services for the fear that their contract may not be renewed. Indian Hotel Industry Essay Example

Indian Hotel Industry Essay Example Indian Hotel Industry Essay Indian Hotel Industry Essay Introduction In India, the hotel industry has monitored enormous boom in current years. The industry is linked with the tourism industry and the growth of hotel industry was fuelled by the tourism industry. It’s been seen that the industry offers luxury and comfort service to increase the foreign exchange of the economy. Early in 1980’s, the hotel industry in India was a budding industry consisting of single hotel companies. Increase in demand for hotels was high in late 1990’s. The increase in business opportunities and flourished economy has boosted the level of growth in hotel industry. According to a report, the Indian hotel industry has a current supply of 110,000 rooms and a scarcity of 150,000 rooms. According to ballpark figure, demand will go above supply by 100% within the next 2 years. The hotel industry in India is going to look rosy in the future. For the next few years, it is seen that the mid-market and budget hotel are going to observe massive growth and development while the segment of luxury will continue to carry out well. The year 2008-09 was one terrible year for Indian tourism because of the terror attack; the hotel industry was affected drastically. The industry experienced a downfall in occupancy and revenue in major cities List of players in the industry * Taj group * Inter-continental * Le meridien group of hotels * Oberoi group of hotels * The park group of hotels * Welcome heritage group of hotels * ITC welcome group of hotels Industry Structure Hotels in India are broadly classified into 7 categories (Five star deluxe, Five star, Four star, Three Star, Two Star, One star and Heritage Hotels) Premium Luxury Segment This segment comprises the high-end Five Star deluxe and Five Star hotels, which mainly provide to the business and upmarket foreign leisure travellers and present a class quality and range of services Mid Market Segment This segment includes 3 and 4 star hotels which cater to the standard foreign and domestic leisure traveller. This segment also accommodate to the middle level business travellers since it offers most of the essential services of luxury hotels without the high costs. Budget Segment These comprise 1 and 2 star hotels known to as â€Å"Budget Hotels†. These categories do not offer as many facilities as the other segments but offers inexpensive accommodation to the highly price-conscious segment of the domestic and foreign leisure tourists. Heritage Hotels In the past four decades, certain architecturally distinctive properties such as palaces and forts, built prior to 1950 have been converted into hotels. The Ministry of Tourism has classified these hotels as Heritage Hotels FDI in hotel Industry The main reason for foreign direct investment policy in India is to promote foreign investment. The liberalized economic policies have converted India the biggest and largest democracy in the global investment. In hotel industry FDI has been allowed up to 100% through automatic route. Automatic approval is given if: 1. Up to 3 % of the capital cost of the project is proposed to be paid for technical consultancy services. 2. Up to 3 % of the net turnover is payable for franchising and marketing/publicity fees. 3. Up to 10 % of gross operating profit is payable for management fees, including incentives fees. Statistical Data- Indian Hotel Industry Size of the Hotel Industry| USD 3. 8 Billion| Share of premium segment in the overall hotel market (2008)| USD 2. 3 Billion| Expected growth rate from 2008 to2009| 12 percent| Key Players| Indian Hotels, Leela Ventures, ITC Hotels, Oberoi Hotels, Bharat Hotels, ITDC, Kamat Hotels. | RoomsCurrent SupplyCurrent Demand| About 110,000 hotels roomsAbout 150,000 hotels rooms| Source: Crisil research Annual Review 2009 Growth Rate In a report it is stated that, the Indian hotel industry has a current supply of 1, 00,000 rooms and a scarcity of 1, 50,000 rooms in India. In the estimate the demand is going to cross supply by 100% in the coming next 2 years. Five star hotels allocate same room for different guest more than once a day. With the difference in demand and supply, the tariffs in hotels are expected to rise 25% annually and 80% of occupancy rate by the next 2 years. To conquer this shortage, the industry is adding 60000 quality class rooms. It is on process with various stages of development which will be all set by 2012. The hotel industry is currently now in an interesting phase. The reason for the boost in demand for hotel rooms is the thriving economy and extreme growth in sectors like IT, Telecom, Retail etc. Moreover, the decision of government is to advance 28 regional airports in towns and to expand Mumbai and Delhi airports so that the business prospects of Indian hotel industry will progress. The advancement of highways linking to various parts of India has helped to open new budget hotels. The campaign INCREDIBLE INDIA which was promoted by the government of India has helped to increase the domestic and international tourism which led to the growth in hotel industry also. Pattern of growth (Seasonal Cyclic) In hotel industry, the pattern of growth is cyclic and seasonal as it is related and based with tourism. As it is inter-related and gone on demand based, in some places like historical places and business centres such as Delhi, Hyderabad etc the demand for hotels are cyclic. Seasonal demand is depended upon location and climate e. g. : beaches in India are visited mainly on summer because of the climate Porter’s Five Force Model Porter’s five forces model determines the attractiveness of long run of a market. The five forces are: * Threats of intense segment rivalry * Threat of new entrants * Threat of substitute products * Bargaining power of suppliers * Bargaining power of consumers 1. BARGAINING POWER OF SUPPLIERS * A chain of hotels is operating in various services like spa, boatels, resorts, city centers etc. * The customers in the hotel industry are fragmented, so they might have to trim down the bargaining power in order to draw the customers. * They have no substitutes for five hotels and spas. * The top class hotels are being operated by few hotels like TAJ, ITC, THE LEELA PALACE so that they have power over the industry. * The Oberoi, TAJ, ITC etc have different rates and tariffs; it is because of the reason that they have their own brand image. 2. BARGAINING POWER OF CONSUMERS The hotel industry is mainly invested in fixed assets, so they are trying to recover their money quickly. * If the price of the hotel changes is moderate, the customers are price sensitive and have low margins. * The hotels are providing more information about them to attract the customers. * Sometimes hotels provide discounts and incentives in order to reduce the bargaining power of consumers. 3. THREAT OF NEW ENTRANTS When it becomes easy for the other companies to enter the industry, the competition of the industry increases. In such state the new players could change the determinintans of the market environment. Distribution channels and raw materials are controlled by players like TAJ, ITC and LEELA PALACE * In India, the cost of land is 50% of total project as it is 15% in abroad. * Customers brand loyalty like TAJ, ITC and LEELA PALACE influences new entrants. * The hotels in foreign country are in connection with Indian hotels to reduce the starting cost and using latter’s brand name. 4. THREAT OF SUBSTITUTES There is going to be a threat from the substitutes if there are alternative lower priced products with better performance for the same purpose. These substitute products can attract a part of the market reducing the sales of existing players. * Switching and fixed costs affects the business * Customers brand loyalty is directing the substitutes such as TAJ, ITC etc. * Hotel connection with the customers and cost are the causes for switching to substitutes. * The current demand and supply is another reason for the choice of substitutes. 5. THREAT OF INTENSE SEGMENT RIVALRY High pressure of competition results in hike on prices, pressure on margins and hence for every single company in the industry on profitability. Powerful on cities especially in metro and slowly picking in minor cities. * Because of the healthy competition with all the players, there is an increase in the growth of industry * The competitors in the hotel industry especially the top one’s are having similar service like the five star. Environmental Analysis PEST Model 1. Political factors Certain rules and regulation should be abided by the citizen of India in order to be in the society. This is applicable for corporation also. Though each corporation has to face rules and regulation, each industry has to face different set of rules and regulation. One should know that in corporation’s perspective the regulation are negative because it takes away their profit or bottom line. However, there is also a positive effect for regulations. Environment is one main factor which the government will have their eye on, and also set up laws that will defend the environment. Hotels are legally responsible to clean up the infected part and other corrective measures under the law and regulation which are associated with environmental matters. Another political factor is that they can impose a law regarding labor in hotel industry 2. Social factors Social factor is another issue which the hotel industry should look into because it deals and functions with customers with different ethnic, demographic, cultural background. The hotel industry may have a chance to expand by the way of treating each customer in a loyally. 3. Technological factor A hotel must be up to date with all the latest gadgets and technological changes. A hotel must be advanced and should prevent obsolescence. Why it is said to be advanced is that the changes might have an impact on the industry. As it is the 21st century, we all know that there is a strong and powerful focus on technology. Today the internet is being used everywhere. Now it is a place for shopping, music, games etc. In this factor, the hotels should know that if they don’t have a well developed website, they can loose potential customers. Also they should aggressively advertise through the internet. Further to add in with the discussion, the computers can be use for organizing the operations. So by moving through this direction can make the hotel much attractive, save cost and increase revenue. 4. Ecological factors Environment is something which the living beings link with it every day. The decisions are often guided by the environmental condition. For e. g. if it is foggy outside, the chances for going for trucking or hiking are very less. The unsure climate can have an impact on hotels mainly situated in ski resorts. To solve this problem is to create a strong brand image in the minds of consumer. By this GDP growth, we can see that it is a strong service sector, stable FDI and government policies which helped to maintain growth rate. The hotel industry’s market size is more than twice as about USD 1 billion in 2004. It is said that there are chances for India to have something like 40 international hotel brands by 2012. Also the occupancy rates have also increased from 52% in 1999 to 67% in 2008. Inspite of the global recession, the arrival of tourist increased from 4. 8 million to 5. 37 million in 2008. Basically what it means is that there is 100% Challenges * Poor infrastructure * Numerous license are required to approve a lengthy process * Due to economic recession, there’s been a slowdown in demand. Conclusion In recent years, India started examining massive growth in mid market and luxury market will performing very well in the coming years. In future, the industry will have marvellous opportunities because of the booming trends in tourism and government encouraging campaign of INCREDIBLE INDIA and other promotional measures. Even through the industry is filled with full of opportunities, they are undergoing certain difficulties regarding the cost of land which is 50% of the total cost and also the taxes. The hotel industry is inviting foreign investment which is an excellent indication and the industry is trying to fill the demand and supply gap. Writing introductions and endings to grab attention and leave an impression

Writing introductions and endings to grab attention and leave an impression Writing intros and endings We remember firsts and lasts much more than we remember in betweens. Most people can remember their first day at school, or what they had for dinner last night, for example. Thats why introductions and conclusions are perhaps the two most critical parts of any document. Unfortunately, theyre also often the weakest. Most people have no idea how to write an introduction that grabs the readers attention. And even more people neglect to write a conclusion altogether. But there are four basic types of intro and ending that you can use for most documents. Here are two of them. Getting started Many people follow the misguided advice to start somewhere in the middle and write the introduction last. But getting your introduction right doesnt just attract the reader, it also helps your document flow as you write. So begin writing your introduction first. One of the most effective types of introduction is the historical beginning. This type of introduction contrasts what used to happen last year/century or whenever with whats happening now, and creates a real sense of movement in your readers mind. For example: Ten years ago, the marketing budget was 3 million a year. Now that figure has almost tripled. Now youve got your readers attention, theyll almost certainly be eager to know why the budget has increased so much. Start telling them, and theyre hooked. Closure The conclusion is your opportunity to leave a lasting impression and keep what youve written in the readers mind. One good way to do this is to look forward, or predict the future. For example: The annual report shows that growth has been steady, but sales still need to improve for the upturn to continue. You can find out more about effective intros and endings on an Emphasis in-company or public course. Or you can email to ask us about how we can help your organisation. Employability skills Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Employability skills - Assignment Example Working in the sales department with a team dealing with customer support is certainly a huge task that comes with huge responsibilities. Setting up personal responsibilities in this area is somehow similar to updating job description to increase tasks and responsibilities, which are congruent with the overall objective of the organization. One needs to ask him/herself the following questions before setting responsibilities; what have I done? What do I need to do in order to progress myself? Finally, how do I execute it? These three questions are important in ensuring that your personal responsibilities meet both personal and interests of the organization. My first personal responsibility as a customer support personnel involves satisfying the expectations of the client. The second responsibility involves coordinating with individual users of our service to assess their needs. The third responsibility involves providing adequate information to the clients all the time. The fourth res ponsibility involves developing effective rapport with other service colleagues. The fifth responsibility involves ensuring that you are up to date with current service delivery methods and procedures to increase customer satisfaction. Performance targets unlike personal responsibilities, which makes use job description, go beyond the tasks and duties stated in the job description. Armstrong, (2009; p6) elucidates that when an idea of high quality job performance crosses your mind then one starts to think about expected job outcomes. Everyone at the work is always expected to meet his or her job objectives and thus the need for personal performance targets. For instance, customer support staffs need to ask themselves the following question in order to effectively set personal performance goals. How am I expected to act with the customers and support center colleagues? What are the mandatory organization values? Finally what procedures, methods and process should I employ? My perform ance targets based on my experience in working as a customer support personnel include but not limited to the following: Responding to at least 90% of all the incoming enquiries either through main or telephone; Attending to at least 99% of all complaints from customers promptly; Enhancing my customer service and interpersonal skills within 3 months. Contact at least 60% of new customers to find out about satisfaction of the services. Contact at least 70% of the clients who received a repair to find out if they were satisfied by the services. Evaluating personal effectiveness against defined objectives is an important undertaking for every employee considering that it demonstrates areas where an individual employee effectively succeeded and where he/she requires improvements (Keller, 2010; p196). Self-assessment is applied in a wide range of professional settings including customer support services and therefore it is a noble idea for customer support personnel to undertake self-ass essment to establish their effectiveness to meet customer care challenges and above all their competence in relation to customer service skills. An evaluation of my personal effectiveness against personal objectives played a significant role in knowing my level of performance with respect to competency in customer service skills. One of the biggest challenges that most employers face is how to motivate their employees to attain their full potential at work. It is

Advantages of Breastfeeding Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Advantages of Breastfeeding - Research Paper Example The World Health Organization, health care unions, and government health organizations confirm the logical confirmation of the obvious advantage of human milk as well as the risks associated with artificial milk products. The WHO along with the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that mothers exclusively breastfeed their newborns al least for the initial six months, and carry on for at least two and a half years. Human milk gives best advantages for babies, together with premature, as well as sick infants. Human milk is only one of its kinds. Advanced nutrients as well as useful substances are present in human milk that cannot be replaced. â€Å"Breastfeeding offers best physical condition, nutritional, immunologic and developmental benefits to newborns as well as protection from postpartum complications and future disease for mothers† (Sears, p. 190). Breast milk is the most comprehensive type of nourishment for newborns. Experts have indicated, â€Å"It has just the exa ct amount of fat, sugar, water, and protein that is needed for a baby's growth and development† (American Academy of Pediatrics, p. 301). Most newborns find it convenient to digest breast milk as compared to formula-feed. As a result, breastfed babies grow precisely the way they are supposed to. They are likely to gain less extra weight and to be leaner. This may result in staying away from being overweight during the teenage years or even after that. Breast milk has antibodies in it to help defend newborns from germs and viruses. Latest researches on this topic revel that children who are not exclusively breastfed for at least six months are more expected to develop a wide range of contagious diseases together with ear infections, diarrhea, and respiratory illnesses (American Academy of Pediatrics, p. 301) and have additional hospitalizations. In addition, babies who are not breastfed have a 19 percent higher post neonatal newborn death rate in the United States. A number of studies imply that babies who are not breastfed have increasing rates of ‘sudden infant death syndrome’ (SIDS) (Newman, p. 320-23) during the initial year of life, and higher rates of â€Å"type 1 and type 2 diabetes, lymphoma, leukemia, Hodgkin's disease, overweight and obesity, high cholesterol and asthma† (Newman, p. 323). For children, breastfeeding sustains best growth and defends against severe and chronic sickness. For mothers, breastfeeding assists with improvement from pregnancy as well as from childbirth and gives lifetime health benefits. For society, breastfeeding offers a variety of financial as well as environmental rewards. Breast milk is a remarkable substance that cannot be replaced by some artificial means. Matchless in its composition and function, breast milk has a perfect balance of nutrition that the newborn can digest without difficulty. It changes eventually, and even d the course of a day, to meet the varying requirements of the growing b aby. It has substances vital for best development of the infant’s intellect, with effects on both cognitive as well as visual function. It provides growth factors that ‘join to mature the infant gut’. It gives the newborn with immune factors made to fight allergens as well as diseases particular to the mother’s and newborn’s atmosphere (Hausman, p. 192). Advantages for Children In particular, experts have identified that breastfeeding provides benefits for children no other alternative of feeding can duplicate. The advantages of breastfeeding start from the initial moments following childbirth and last for a number of years once breastfeeding stops. In comparison

Constructive Critique on Public Speaking Essay Example for Free

Constructive Critique on Public Speaking Essay Dr. Pausch lost his battle with cancer, but his legacy lives on through his achievements and in the countless number of students who were fortunate to learn from such an extraordinary individual. Dr. Randy Pausch was a widely respected professor from the University of Carnegie Mellon. He co-founded the entertainment technology center in 1999 and he spearheaded the creation of the Alice Project, a program that aids in the learning of computer science academics. Dr. Pausch has received numerous accolades from his work and dedication to his students. He has appeared on many television shows like Good Morning America and the Oprah show. To this day people are still recounting the lessons learned from Dr. Pausch. In a recent video interview highlighted on the Oprah’s website, one lady stated what she thought was so meaningful to her about Dr. Pausch and his lectures as his amazing outlook on life and his appreciation for every aspect of his life. These qualities are witness in his 2008 lecture nicknamed the Last Lecture. Throughout the lecture Dr. Pausch showcased his ability to reach out to his audience. He and captured their imagination with his humor and enthusiasm despite begin diagnosed with cancer six months earlier. Because of the importance and popularity of this inspiring lecture I will provide a critique of Dr. Pausch ability to deliver his massage to his audience and analyze his public speaking mechanics. More specifically I will look at the way he keeps the audience engaged and what are the areas he could improve. Strengths noted: From the moment the lecture began I was hooked. Dr. Pausch did not waste any time keeping the audience engaged and keeping them marveling at the foundations of his strength despite his diagnosis. After the standing applause, Dr. Pausch told his listeners to â€Å"make me earn†. This mindset shows that he cares about the message that he was about to give and the message that the audience was about to receive. He also started his lecture with this question which I though was the glue to the seats. His question was fundamental in keeping them engaged and thinking. â€Å"If you had one last lecture to give to the world before you died what would it be?† From this point on, If this was Dr. Pausch last lecture I wanted the hear it. Thereafter, He gave a back story in the lecture which to thought was helpful to the audience member that did not know his circumstances. One of the tactic in his lecture that I though was the most important is he told the audience what he was not going to talked about. This eliminated all guessing and left no room for disappointment. I thought that I was public speaking brilliances. Pausch visual media kept the focus of the lecture and was very easy to follow and understand. It was clear, concise and to the point. He also has props. He voice was evenly tone and he spoke as if he was just engaging in a normal conversation. Additionally Dr. Pausch humor seemed to be naturel; he kept his audience laughing throughout the lecture which I think helped them to stay uninterested. Last but not less, I love that the lecture was not just a lecture to the audience but a lecture to his children. Knowing that he passed away made that lecture much more intimate and could be used as a blueprint for all parents to help their children achieve their dreams. Areas to improve: Connecting to the audience is definitely Dr. Pausch strong suit but sometimes he did get off topic a little bit. Because he is such a dynamic person I understand that it can be easy to get caught telling your person story rather than sticking to the topic. I noticed Dr. Pausch did get off topic a few times and told a few side bar stories but not too much that would have downgraded the lectures quality. Conclusion: I my introduction I highlight the accomplishment of DR. Pausch; the inspirational professor from Carnegie Mellon University. I was instructed to write a critique about his â€Å"last lecture;† that focused on the strength and the areas of improvement. In the strengths the most important aspect about the lecture is that Dr. Pausch keeps the audience entirely engaged throughout. Dr Pausch spoke for 72 min with the complete attention of his audience. In the strengths of my critique I was able to show this by highlighting the various tactics that were used. For example the question he asked in the beginning of the lecture was one tactic and his great sense of humor was another. Areas of improve were hard to find but the only time I found any in the lecture was when Dr. Pausch gets off topic a few times; other than that the lecture was flawless. Unfortunately we lost Dr. Pausch too soon but his lesson will live forever. Everyone can learn something from his willingness live life to the fullest no matter what god has in store for you. The one quote that stands out to me in the lecture is â€Å"you can’t change the cards we are dealt just how we play the hand† Bibliography http://www.cmu.edu/randyslecture/story/index.html http://www.oprah.com/oprahshow/Lessons-Learned-from-Randy-Pausch-Video http://www.etc.cmu.edu/site/

Real Boys Essay -- English Literature Essays

Real Boys While Reading the book Real Boys by Dr. William Pollack, I realized that our society is holding boys to contradictory standards aiding the problems that many of them face while in adolescence. This book introduces the reader to numerous boys who share their feelings of shame and despair in trying to live up to the "Boy Code". Pollack feels the pain that comes from boys prematurely separating from their mothers puts them on the cycle to hardening themselves emotionally. The one acceptable emotion becomes anger. Throughout the book Pollack encourages parents to take time with their sons in helping them express their feelings while showing them empathy and love. Pollack discusses the ways parents can help their boys escape from the gender straightjacket that is imposed upon them. Pollack exposes myths that negatively portray boys as macho creatures shaped by testosterone with no social skills. He instead presents examples of boys who are emphatic as a result of nurturing parents and educates the reader to be aware that boys express their love through action and work. Pollack includes chapters regarding the different but equally important role of mothers and fathers in bringing up their sons. He also writes about the effect of healthy relationships with peers and the devastation that some boys feel when they discover they are homosexual. Pollack takes on the schools in failing boys in a number of ways but specifically for failing to understand the Boy Code. Boys continue to lose self-esteem as the mask of masculinity tightens and they conform to what society expects from them, interfering with their ability to learn effectively. Dr. Pollack not only gives us the problems that face the adolescent boy he also gives us suggestions to remedy and rectify the situation. This is nice instead of simply offering negative statements he actually offers the reader a solution. Another beneficial aspect of Dr. Pollack’s writing is the fact that he uses so many references to his research and the research of other notable psychologists instead of over emphasizing the personal instances in his own life. When he wants to emphasize a point with a real life person, he uses a third party. When speaking of these contradictory codes that a young boys is taught to live by, Dr. Pollack says: "Boys have had to learn to walk a fine line. Have intimacy without sentimen... ...ollack talks on breaking down gender stereotypes; he seems to perpetuate them by seeming to insist that the mom be the central part of upbringing. Extensive sections on single moms but the only discussion of single dad households is two sentences which state that research showing relatively positive outcomes (i.e. relative to mom getting sole custody, not relative to intact families) is controversial. Pollack notes that Dads are more likely to suffer from depression after a divorce but does not draw the logical reason. Dads lose far more than moms in a divorce. Yes moms economic status goes down more, but she tends to keep what is really important... the kids. Even today the courts are horribly biased against men in divorce cases. A mom must be totally unfit to not get at least joint custody, dad has to fight for minimal visitation rights. These are however minor quibbles with the book, the central principle of the book: Today’s boys are in big trouble, and much of that tr ouble stems from never being allowed to show any negative emotion other than anger, is a very important one. Boys are not toxic they need our love and support, even if they put on a tough self-sufficient disguise.

Informative Article About Bullying Essay

Have you ever heard about Amanda Todd, a 15 years old Canadian girl who took her life away, on October 2012, because of cyber bullying. Before her suicide, Amada decided to post a video telling her story about how she was blackmailed, physical and psychological abused. Bullying is a social problematic and a global issue which touches most of the population, because it does not only happen at schools, you can also be witness of this in companies, or any other community. The website Bullying. rg defines bullying as â€Å"a learned behavior. It is when a person or group tries to hurt or control another person in a harmful way. † Rosa Castillo (2013), teacher of a public school in Bogota, Colombia, said that â€Å"bullying is an action which lasts on kid for a long time, and this is one of the reasons why students start a low performance on schools†. According to stopbullying. gov, the types of bullying included, verbal bullying, is tell bad things to someone (name-calling, teasing); social bullying, involves damage somebody? reputation (embarrass a person in public, spread a gossip, leaves somebody aside); and the last type is physical bullying, hurts somebody? s objects or body (punching, break of stuff). Furthermore, the increases of technology uses on young population and the lack of parents control about it, is making easier to develop a field of bullying on the web. This type of bullying is known as ciberbullying, which take place at using the electronic device and social networks. Read more:  Essay on the person you admire the most This kind of bullying is a little bit harder with the victims, as it could happen 7/24 (7 days a week and 24 hour a day), also ciberbullying spread fast all on the web, reaching all the person? s contacts. A lot of kids believe, that making others feel less than he, would make him better. The truth is some of this kids has an issue that thy want to hide from the others, that? s why, they use bullying as a defense mechanism. Another possible answer for the behavior is they want to call the attention of someone (parent, group of friend). On the other hand, is important the role of parents or big sister/brother, because most of the times these are the one kids admire and want to follow. Teacher Rosa, explain that the kids more likely to being bullied are the ones who are considered weak. And the bullies are those who are more popular around the group or are strong. Some people consider that bullying is a stage of the childhood and it will have an ending. Last statement is totally false, bullying is a problematic and it has to receive treatment. Bullies and bullied, both will have a short and long term consequences. But the victimizers are more likely to experience the consequences in long term. The bullies are more susceptible to get involve in dangerous activities (vandalize, physical fights, abuse of alcohol or/and drugs), and also they are more likely to experience bullying as his behavior does not fit in the environment of work. The psychologist Dan Olweus, of Norway, found on his study that about 60% of schools students in Scandinavian countries who were bullies had one or more incidents of being convicted of a crime by the time they were 24 years old. On the other hand, the victims might experience the consequences from the first time of bullying, such as low self-esteem, anxiety, sleep difficulties, missing classes, and so on. One of the most worried consequences is that the victims could become violent, toward themselves or with the community, as the bullied would want revenge of all the public embarrassed he had passed. As we can see on the newspaper and all over the news, in the last years, the number of bullycides (is a term used to describe suicide as the result of bullying) of young people increasing alarmingly in the entire world.

How does the relationship between salt concentration

How does the relationship between salt concentration effect osmosis in the aquatic plant Elodea? Quantitative data From observing the cells under a microscope, we see that they are continuously moving and therefore are alive. We have observed that when the cells are in the 10% sodium chloride, the chloroplasts are positioned to the sides of the cell wall and the cytoplasm is more expanded. Cells in the distilled water are slightly smaller than the cells in the sodium chloride solution and the chloroplasts have begun moving to the same. Finally, cells in the isotonic water are very small and equally spread out through out the cells. Conclusion From observing the Elodea in different concentration of water, we can see that the more concentrated the solution is, the more osmosis occurs. This can be seen from the change from observing the plant in isotonic water, distilled water and a 10% sodium chloride solution. As the concentration of the solution increases, the cytoplasm and chloroplas t was pushed to the edges of the cell membrane instead of being spread out like in the isotonic water. This observation is especially visible for he 10% sodium chloride solution; where all of its chloroplast was on the boundary and pressure of the cytoplasm is more. This occurs because of osmosis where water molecules move in the sodium chloride solution as osmosis works from a region of lower solute concentration to a region of higher solute concentration across a partially permeable membrane. The sodium chloride molecules moves across the membrane so the net is in equilibrium, due to this the elodea contain more water and therefore becomes larger. At some cells, we can see that they look very weak and ull, these are the cells which are reaching the maximum capacity of water they can obtain. If we were to leave the elodea in higher concentration solution they may burst due too much water flowing and pressure inside the cells. There was only a gradual change between the cell in the is otonic water and distilled water since the salt concentration to the distilled water was not very strong. Also, because the solution is less solute is due to less molecules held up so they move more freely across the membrane. Thus, a smaller net movement of water is evident. However, we can still ee some small changes such as the some of the chloroplasts have been moved the side, as while as the cell has expanded slightly, especially the cytoplasm. When place in isotonic solution, the cell does not experience any changes since there is an equal exchange of water. The reason for this is the solution and cell has the same concentration, therefore water moves in the same direction so osmosis does not occur. There is no pressure inside the cell so the cytoplasm is not pressed against happens better in concentrated solutions where the cytoplasm and chloroplast are ainly affected.Although I only did the experiment once, my results may not be completely accurate; however, because of our kn owledge of osmosis, we can infer that the results are to a large extend reliable and can be use to Justify our conclusion. Evaluation Limitation How it affected the results How to improve it The slide where the cell was put on to be observed under the microscope may have contained traces of previous concentration of solutions. Because the solutions were mixed (for instance, some traces of isotonic water on slide when the cell was put in istilled water) it could weaken the concentration of the solution. The weaker solution may create a barrier to how much of the stronger solution could enter the cell. Therefore, the cell could contain more of the weaker solution than the stronger. Due to more of the weaker solution, osmosis may not occur as effectively as it would with a pure solution. After observing the elodea, cleanse it thoroughly so excess water comes off. When wanting to observe the next elodea in a different concentration take a new slide each time so there is the cell is on a completely clean surface. The harsh ight of the microscope created heat, which was aimed towards the cell. The heat would have made the cell drier by drying the water that the cell contained. This would have made the cell flaccid as the cell loses water and has lack of firmness. Therefore the cells' structure would be altered, giving false results. Decrease the amount of light shined on the cell. Also, only switch off the microscope when not using to observe to ensure that extra light will not shine. The time the leaf is left in the solution is not consistent. – Sometimes the leaf was left for 5 minutes sometimes onger. The time needs to be consistent since the effects of osmosis may be more visible if there is longer time. The cell in a particular concentration may be less â€Å"developed† compared to the cell in another concentration, which was in the solution for a longer period of time. Have a fix time for the elodea cell to be in each of the solutions. (10 minutes w ould be a good time) The experiment was only done once This may not have given very accurate results as the one trial we did may have been flawed. Therefore it is not very reliable to assume that our results will always give the ame conclusions that concentration effect osmosis.Do the experiment at least fives times to compare the results to make sure they are all similar. This way you can ensure that your results are more accurate and have no anomalies. Different leaves were used for each of the three solutions. and how everything is placed. Because of this, we do not know if the changes we see are due to osmosis or if the leaves are different from each other. It makes comparison between the concentration of solutions harder as we need to be more cautious in what we assume are the effects of osmosis.Use the same leaf whenever changing into a different solution. However make sure to fully cleanse the leaf after putting in each concentration to ensure there is no traces of old concen tration. Limitation by use of sketching to collecting information There might be human error when sketching since we cannot locate the same part of the plant and also there is different amount of cells within each part. Humans may also produce error when drawing the shapes, so when comparing, it is difficult to know whether the shapes produce are caused by human error or osmosis.

Scholarship Essay

Scholarship Essay Scholarship Essay I am the kind of person that becomes relentless when my sights are set on a target. When I determine my priority, I make every adjustment necessary to align my actions and thoughts towards that goal. This is something I have learned about myself during my transition into college. No matter what the endeavor, I am tenacious and resourceful enough to achieve success. This trait, as I have discovered, is perfect for scoring the highest possible grades in my university coursework. Some of my friends from my hometown barely recognize me because of the vast transformation I have undergone to become a scholar. Before coming into college, my priorities were not aligned with a desirable long term outcome. Georgia State University has provided me the perfect platform to set positive goals, and then accomplish those goals via the abundance of resources and opportunities available to me. I have never held myself to a higher standard than I do now. I will spend hours upon hours in the library to absorb the information from my courses. I am not satisfied with myself until I can not only regurgitate the information as it is written in the chapter or lecture, but also analyze and interpret the content in a way that I understand without ambiguity. My grade point average is one reflection of my insatiable desire to exceed my curriculum. I also have extracurricular aspirations that will advance my professional and personal goals. My work with a major programming board on campus, Spotlight Programs Board, provides me valuable information about event logistics and networking that are crucial to my success as an independent

Turabian Format

Turabian Format The Turabian format has been used for citation for decades. In fact, Turabian footnotes and bibliographies have become standard at some universities. By embracing the principles and guidelines that Kate Turabian put forth, you can be sure to create crisp and correct language for your term papers, each time. The Ease of the Turabian Format Perhaps the best part of using the Turabian format for citation is its sheer common sense. There are few quirks and tricky spots involved. Furthermore, each instruction is peppered with examples for clear comparison and comprehension. The Turabian format includes two separate types of citations from which you can choose. Whether youre interested in formal footnotes, or gravitate towards parenthetical citations, the Turabian format can accommodate your writing needs. Because the Turabian method was developed by a dissertation secretary, this style appeals to lower and higher education levels alike. If you are looking to create notations in Turabian format, you might consider investing in Turabian Style software. Using this software, you can create citations in Turabian format in a matter of moments. With easy to use interface, these programs can often streamline your writing process, and make citations a snap.
